On September 3rd, Meltcalfe Family Farm, located in Caledon, hosted the 90th annual Peel-Dufferin Plowmen’s Association plowing match. The event originated in England, as a way to make plowing more enjoyable, and was brought over to Canada when the British immigrated to Canada and began to tend to Canadian soil. Metcalfe Farm is made up of approximately 200 acres of farmland, and is comprised of mainly corn, wheat, barley and oats, dependent on price. Joe Metcalfe, Founder of Metcalfe farms, expressed his appreciation on hosting such a legendary event, and added that getting some extra help in the field was just a bonus. The plowing match is an all day event, with most of prior week dedicated to prepping and out-of-town plowers settling in, and is inclusive to children and adults of all ages. As Matthew Strader states in his article within the Caledon Enterprise, that “plow lines littered the Metcalfe fields as far as the eye could see.” Jonathan Gray, a 12 year old plower,  also states within the article that not only is it a fun activity for him, but it’s a great bonding activity for him and his grandpa, which is often difficult to come by these days.
