Dufferin County’s Transportation Master Plan Echoes Solutions for Population Growth: A Stirring Call to Action by the Town Crier

Dufferin County is taking proactive steps to accommodate future population growth and changing transportation needs through a comprehensive transportation master plan. Presented by Brett Sears of WSP, the plan addresses current travel patterns and proposes solutions for various transportation modes, road widening, and bypass construction to meet the anticipated population growth by 2051.

Sears stressed the importance of preparation, acknowledging that while the current County Road network can handle existing volumes, future growth necessitates strategic planning. The plan outlines improvements at both the County and Ministry of Transportation (MTO) levels.

County-level initiatives involve widening County Rd. 109, County Rd. 16, County Rd. 7, and creating a new road along Amaranth East Luther Towline. MTO-level recommendations include widening Hwy. 9 and Hwy. 10. However, concerns were raised about the extended timeline for widening Hwy. 10, scheduled for completion by 2051.

Councillors expressed particular concern about the delayed upgrade of Hwy. 10, citing ongoing issues and accidents. Deputy Mayor Darren White emphasized the urgency of addressing the highway sooner. Additionally, questions were raised about County Rd. 124 and the consideration of collision data in road upgrade decisions.

The proposed Shelburne bypass also garnered attention, with councillors expressing disappointment at the lack of consultation on its location. Concerns were raised about the need for Ministry of Transportation consultation and the suggested location across 30 Side Rd.

Warden Wade Mills underscored the county’s advocacy role in pushing for these projects, recognizing their high priority. The plan will undergo periodic updates to align with evolving needs. Future steps include public reviews, budget allocation, environmental assessments, and design before construction begins.
