The Great Horned Owl: Canada’s Majestic Predator

Posted on Posted in Wings Over Caledon

The Great Horned Owl, one of Canada’s most iconic birds, is recognized for its tufted “horns” and striking yellow eyes. Ranging from forests to urban areas, it stands 18 to 25 inches tall with a wingspan up to 5 feet.

Folklore suggests that their presence is a good omen, bringing fortune and watching over families. Its haunting call, a series of deep hoots, marks territory and communicates with mates. With a varied diet of small mammals and birds, the Great Horned Owl is a formidable hunter.

Though not currently threatened, habitat loss is a concern. Protecting their environments ensures future generations can admire these majestic creatures, symbolizing the beauty and mystery of Canada’s wildlife.
