In 2024, Ontario has seen a troubling rise in break-ins and auto thefts, with break-ins occurring every 90 seconds across Canada and auto thefts increasing by 120% since 2021. Several factors contribute to these alarming trends, including economic instability, rising property values, and the growing demand for stolen vehicles. The ongoing drug and addiction crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic’s impact on mental health, has led more individuals to turn to theft to survive. Technological advancements in car security systems and the availability of tools to bypass them have also made auto theft easier. Additionally, increased awareness and better reporting mechanisms have likely contributed to the statistics. These factors highlight the urgent need for stronger security measures, community engagement, and addressing the root causes of economic and social instability to curb the rise in property crimes.

Here are some tips to help prevent auto theft and home burglaries:

1. Lock Doors and Windows

  • Always lock doors and windows when leaving home or when you’re sleeping.
  • Install deadbolt locks, sliding door locks, and reinforce window latches to make them harder to open.
  • Add locks or security bars to windows and sliding glass doors, as these are often easy entry points for burglars.

2. Use Security Systems

  • Install a burglar alarm or home security system, which may include surveillance cameras, motion sensors, and monitoring services that alert authorities.
  • Many systems can be monitored remotely via smartphones.

3. Secure Valuables

  • Keep valuables such as jewellery, electronics, and important documents in a safe or hidden location.
  • Consider using a fireproof safe for sensitive items.

4. Use Outdoor Lighting

  • Install motion-sensor lights around your home’s perimeter, especially near entry points.
  • Bright lighting around doors, windows, and dark corners can deter potential burglars.

5. Don’t Advertise Vacations

  • Avoid sharing travel plans on social media, and delay posting vacation photos until after you return.
  • Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to pick up your mail and packages while you’re away.
  • Use timers for lights, radios, or TVs to create the impression that someone is home.
  • If you’re away for an extended period, ask a neighbor to collect your mail or park their car in your driveway.

6. Install Security Cameras

  • Set up cameras in visible areas to deter criminals.
  • Many modern cameras connect to smartphones, providing real-time footage and control over your property.

7. Beware of Giving Out Personal Information

  • Be cautious about sharing personal information over the phone or online, as thieves often use social engineering tactics to gather data for fraud or theft.

8. Reinforce Entry Points

  • Strengthen weak entry points like doors, windows, and garage doors with security bars, metal frames, or stronger materials.
  • Consider using a peephole or camera to see who’s at your door.
  • Trim shrubs and trees near windows or doors to eliminate hiding spots.

9. Mark Your Property

  • Engrave your valuables with a unique identifier (e.g., your driver’s license number).
  • This can help track stolen property and act as a deterrent.

10. Use Timers for Lights

  • Use timers to turn on lights, radios, or televisions while you’re away to give the impression someone is home.
  • Motion-activated lights around your property, especially near entry points, can be a strong deterrent.

11. Be Discreet with Packages

  • If ordering online, use delivery services that require a signature or pick up items from secure locations, like lockers or post offices.
  • If possible, arrange for packages to be delivered when you’re home.

12. Get to Know Your Neighbours

  • Establish a strong relationship with your neighbours.
  • Watch out for each other’s property and inform one another of suspicious activities in the neighbourhood.
  • A close-knit community can be a valuable asset in preventing theft.

By following these tips for both home and auto theft prevention, you can reduce the chances of becoming a target for criminals. Stay vigilant, and always take extra precautions to protect your property!
