Upgrading 4 intersections & traffic lights on Highway 10 through south Caledon a promised success!

Posted on Posted in Caledon, Transport Supportive Development, Uncategorized

There have been 583 accidents and counting on Highway 10 inside 2 years plus 65 fatal or near fatal accidents have occurred along a 20 km stretch of highway 10 south of Orangeville. Many at or near our local intersections in the last 30 months. The 410 merger with highway 10, has resulted in the volume of traffic on highway 10 increasing 4 fold inside 15 years. Recently it was approximated at more than 80,000 cars a day. There has been minimal safety improvements at our intersections. The numbers speak volumes.

Hwy 10 Improvement Plan – Valleywood Blvd to Hwy 9:

Olde Base Line Rd: Investigate vehicle detection technologies to reduce red light violations. Reduce red light violations. Vehicle detection system would extend green signal time for approaching vehicles when predetermined criteria are met. Winter 2013/2014

Olde Base Line Rd: Add Keep Right Warning Sign to signal pole. Warns motorists that they are approaching a signal pole and concrete median island and to keep right of it. Fall 2013

Olde Base Line Rd: Implement northbound and southbound fully protected left turn phases Increase safety for northbound and southbound left turning motorists Northbound and southbound left turning motorists will only be able to turn left when facing a green left turn arrow. Left turn movements will not be permitted when Hwy 10 through traffic is traveling through the intersection. Spring 2014

We would like to thank you and your colleagues for their insightful decisions! We look forward to experiencing the added safety of the advance green light at our local intersection.

Again a large thank-you to everyone that showed and voiced their support for making the commute along highway 10 in south Caledon a safer ride.

May everyone have a safe, festive holiday season.

  1. Dear Geoff;
    Thanks, this clearly demonstrates that small things can make a difference.
    The support of many from the Inglewood area was invaluable as was the tenacious support of M.P.P Sylvia Jones & Mayor Morrison.
    We look forward to the M.T.O implementing the promised upgrades.
    Safe driving, have a wonderful summer, Ciao, Tom.

  2. The new left turn signal at Olde Base Line and Hwy 10 is detrimental to vehicles turning left, southbound. The reason is that after the initial pack of traffic northbound clears the intersection, there is a very large gap, providing plenty of time to make a safe left turn. Now with this new left turn light, about four cars can turn with the light before it changes, then after the left turn light is red, you are stuck at the intersection, unable to make a left, while facing no oncoming traffic. This is very frustrating. A better solution for this intersection would be an advanced green, which then changes to a solid green, thus solving both problems. I hope this proposal will be given some consideration, as this new change has added a level of frustration to my otherwise enjoyable morning commute.
    Thank you.

    1. Dear Iain;
      This very point was raised with councilor Doug Beffort shortly after the instillation of the aforementioned lights, with no tangible reply..
      .We strongly advocate that you and other concerned citizens contact your local councilor, regional councilor,local community group, M.P.P, M.P or the ministry of transport or all of the above if you are looking to ferment progressive change.
      Just a short FYI, sadly it took nearly 3 years of solid petitioning to have these safety upgrades implemented at HGH 10 & olde base line.. Meanwhile we experienced another death, several near fatalities numerous accidents and less than empathetic prose, as stating” that the # of deaths on the Kings Highway were within acceptable limits”. Truman Capote could not have been more Sang Froid !
      Thank-you for your comment, there is so much more that can be done ! We are more than happy to have someone grab the standard and speak out regarding the numerous blatant safety deficiencies along south highway 10.
      Have fun, if you ever decide to stand up and put your Big Boy Pants on, don`t forget to mention the 10 missing light standards at the 10 & 410 merge. This is a 400 series highway, improper illumination is inexcusable. Have a safe commute. Best Regards, Tom. .
