“Road deaths on steady decline, but more work needs to be done”

Posted on Posted in Caledon, Transport Supportive Development, Uncategorized

This was the headline of an article published in the Caledon Citizen yesterday. The article discusses the number and reduction of fatal collisions on O.P.P. patrolled roads in Ontario over the last 10 years, and more specifically, in 2013 (290 deaths) and 2014 (287 deaths). Without question, any reduction in the number of deaths resulting from collisions is a positive step, but we are certainly hopeful that the completed and scheduled improvements to Highway 10 that we have been following and documenting over the last few years will help those figures drop even further. It’s impossible to know how many accidents were avoided as a result of the installation of advanced green lights at the intersection of Olde Base Line and Highway 10, but there is always progress that can be made to prevent future crashes from other causes.

Much of this article focuses on the fact that the majority of these accidents were avoidable because they were the result of driver-related causes (i.e. inattentiveness, speeding, etc.). This is another reason why we think it is important to share this piece; hopefully the more awareness that can be brought to these issues, the more progress that can be made to reduce or eliminate them. For many of our staff, Highway 10 is a part of their daily commute and it is not often a day goes by that we do not see police patrolling this route. However, like the article says, they cannot do it alone, it has to be a cumulative effort, from individual drivers through to the M.T.O., for the maximum impact to be made.

We will be watching closely for these improvements to be finished and for the results of the Town’s upcoming discussions with the M.T.O., and hopefully next year’s figures will show an even greater decline in the number of collision-related fatalities.
